MTM Impact

A student last year was awarded a stipend in the amount of $500 which was enough to allow him to take a class at Calhoun College. No one in his immediate family had ever attended college. The student knew the only way he could get the stipend was to attend a college. He enrolled and fell in love with the concept of pursuing higher education. He had to go to work to support his family; however, he currently is taking one class a semester. To MTM, this is still a success story for had it not been for that stipend, the student would not have attempted to pursue higher learning.
Another recipient was selected by his school as an Unsung Hero Honoree because of how he presented himself in school. He wanted to be a mechanic when he graduated from high school. One of the judges was a Dean of Student Services at Calhoun College and she noticed his desire was to be a mechanic. The dean worked with MTM and the student to get him enrolled at a college in the area on an apprenticeship program that would pay for his college and after he completes the program he will have a job with International Diesel. The student's desire was to work at Wal-Mart or a Skill Lube business. He is so happy he became an Honoree for the Unsung Hero Scholarship Fund.

Another recipient's father was hurt on the job during the student's sophomore year in high school. Student saw family was struggling financially so he took on many odd jobs to support the family while attending school. A local businessman noticed him working several odd jobs and hired him at his local drug store. Student worked the maximum number of hours allowed by law while going to school. He gave up playing football and basketball to support his family and maintained a B average the rest of his school year. Most of his classmates were not aware of his financial condition and the long hours he worked to support the family or that he denied himself many things including other extracurricular activities. He completed the application and his school selected him as an Unsung Hero Honoree. He was awarded a scholarship and today he is sophomore at Auburn University.
A student was adopted while in her teens by a couple who divorced after a few years. Student secretly for some reason blamed herself for adoptive parents divorced. One of the parents secretly prayed that the child would receive an award at school during award's day to signify she was the true Hero of the family because she actually brought so much love and joy to the house. The child was awarded a scholarship and the title of the scholarship is Athens/Limestone County Unsung Hero Scholarship Recipient. The child wept as did both of the parents during the ceremony. The student also received a recommendation letter from the school?faculty member?encouraging her to pursue academic excellence and how she was viewed by her peers as a peacemaker, etc. coupled with a letter from the Mayor of Athens declaring her an Unsung Hero of Athens/Limestone County. It boosted her confidence and today she is a junior at UNA pursuing a degree to become a Veterinary
